Giorgi Rokashvili

Founder of ROKA NATURALS

My path began in Sighnaghi, at one of the region's most distinctive wineries and restaurants, where I first felt the depth and beauty of Georgian winemaking culture up close.

From the beginning I was drawn to natural winemaking for its honesty, authenticity, and respect for tradition. I also found real joy in hosting guests, sharing stories, and introducing people to Georgian wine and heritage.

An important part of this journey was shaped by years spent in a natural wine bar in Sighnaghi. That experience gave me not only practical knowledge, but also a deeper understanding of wine as a living expression of place, time, and identity.

Today, with more than 15 years of experience, I continue that path through ROKA NATURALS, making wines rooted in tradition and guided by a simple philosophy: the wine should speak for itself.

It would be a real pleasure to share this experience with you and introduce you to my wines.

Qvevri winemaking tradition in Kakheti, Georgia

History

8,000 Years of Qvevri Tradition

Georgia’s winemaking tradition is one of the oldest in the world, spanning more than 8,000 years. Archaeological evidence shows that as early as the 6th millennium BCE, people in what is now Georgia were producing wine in qvevri — large clay vessels buried underground, creating a naturally stable environment for fermentation.

The qvevri method is unique: grape juice, skins, seeds, and stems ferment together in a continuous, ancient process. This tradition has been passed down through generations and remains a living part of Georgian culture today.

In 2013, traditional Georgian qvevri winemaking was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, recognizing it as a remarkable testament to Georgia’s role as one of the world’s great cradles of wine civilization.
