What Is Natural Wine?

Natural wine is not just "nothing added." In trusted Georgia-based definitions, it begins in the vineyard and carries through to how honestly the finished wine is presented.

According to the Natural Wine Association of Georgia, natural wine begins with vineyard work. The grower-winemaker should care for the vineyard using bio or ecological principles and aim to create a self-sustaining ecosystem in the vineyard.

The same organization also states that winemaking should avoid methods and substances that materially change the wine's natural organoleptic character. In practical terms, that means the goal is not heavy standardization but preserving the wine's own identity.

Another key principle is terroir. The association explicitly says that terroir should play the main role in natural winemaking. That means the wine should express site, soil, climate, and grape rather than excessive technological intervention.

Label honesty matters too. The association emphasizes that the label should truthfully reflect the wine's origin and identity. That is part of why natural wine is not just a production method but also a culture of transparency.

In Georgia, natural wine is often associated with qvevri, native grape varieties, and small producers. But those things do not always automatically mean the same thing. The best way to understand natural wine is to look at the producer, the vineyard, the level of intervention, and the grape variety together.
